Marketing Is Evil
I always learn from/get inspired by my clients. Today I talked to one of them and he said that the resistance to marketing in his industry was huge.

Frankly – my feeling is that the resistance to marketing is huge in ANY industry. Most people still believe that if they do a good job or deliver a great service, buyers (customers or clients as the case may be) will just show up!

And that’s simply not true! But even if they did…how many of them ‘just showing up’ is enough? If you have something important to give to the world, if you have a product or service that will REALLY help someone (and if you don’t…why are you in business?),

then how the hell do you manage to keep quiet about it?

Here’s what Mr Seth Godin has to say: “Marketing is beautiful when it persuades people to get a polio vaccine or wash their hands before doing surgery. Marketing is powerful when it sells a product to someone who discovers more joy or more productivity because he bought it. Marketing is magic when it elects someone who changes the community for the better.”

The question remains: Is (Your) Marketing Evil?

Marketing in itself is neither good nor bad. It is nothing but a tool – a means to an end. The end is to increase your productivity, your profit and your success. If that’s what you’re after, then I don’t believe there’s a way around marketing your business and marketing it consistently.

If you have a resistance to marketing, then the right question to ask is NOT whether it is evil to market, but:

Does my product/service REALLY help people?

And if the answer is YES then I suggest you look for the nearest rooftop and shout about it!!! But seriously, if you’re uncomfortable about marketing your business, then here’s what you should do: You should simply give people heaps of value. And you should do it so well that your followers/subscribers/buyers are simply enchanted by how you share your stuff with them.

Marketing Is Only Evil When Your Product Sucks

Of course this is ONLY if you have something great to sell. If you don’t, then your Marketing truly does become…evil, or at the very least unethical.

But let’s assume whatever it is that you sell is a cut above the rest, and you’re passionate about it, and you deliver it better than your competition…then you owe it to the world to make sure that people know about it, the more people the better.

Marketing Can Be Anything You Want It To Be.

It can be fun. Enchanting. Exciting. It can be lovable. Touching. Funny. Or Inspiring. (see the examples below)

Even on a shoestring budget, it’s up to you to make YOUR Marketing whatever you want it to be. But if you want your business not just to survive, but to thrive – You have got to…
